Artist Statement
Mary is a contemporary artist who creates art in Paint and Print. She was born in a rural farm in Cork and from an early age she was immersed in the landscape around her. She says the memories of the farm are a constant inspiration to her “the animals, the people on the farm, the rhythm of the seasons, the changing patterns of shape, texture, structure and colour” She studied Painting, Printmaking and Art History at the GMIT Centre for Creative Arts and Media. She graduated with a Degree in Fine Art
Mary has spent many years working in traditional printmaking. She uses a sketching and Painting journal as a reference point to create a print. Mary uses brilliant colour, and this process allows her to layer colours using different plates. Sometimes she would overprint with a dry-point plate.
The process of printmaking embodies her response to the landscape. She says “there’s a feeling of satisfaction when I pick up the etching needle, the tools of my trade, connecting with the plate leaving my mark, embedding my creative ideas onto its surface”.
Mary was founder member of “Lorg” the Galway print studio. Lorg provided a printing facility for printmakers in the West of Ireland. Unfortunately Lorg closed a number of years ago.
During the Covid 19 lockdown she spent many hours walking her local area. She says, she is lucky to live in such a beautiful place, very close to the banks of Lough Corrib. Mary is inspired by.

-Autumn foliage in pure colour
-Sunrise on a frosty morning
